Gadgethon

The Friday evening playground for Gadgetphiles and Gizmoholics. Attendees bring their gadget (of any nature - it can even be homemade!) and enter it to compete in the Olympics of Gizmos.

We had some amazing, weird and wacky gadgets presented last year - from revitalising light-up ear plugs to the winning piece, a digital tuba wonder called The Funk Machine. There were plenty of other gadgets, from the odd to those bordering on crazy! You get two minutes to show off your bit of tech (in public and without legal consequences). All you have to do is sign up and bring your gadget with you (nobody's going to believe if you just talk about it).

Gui Ambros NeuroSky Brainwave Sensors NeuroSky produces brainwave sensors for the masses. Basically it's an EEG sensor (read: a sensor that translates electrical activity into - somewhat - meaningful data) that is both affordable and developer-friendly. A few apps will be demonstrated. It is still far from perfect (and no, you can't really read anyone's mind - yet!) but it gives an interesting perspective of how the brain can be used another form of user input. No special needs - just a projector and a camera for close up.

Libby Groettum Easy Bloom Plant Sensor Technology to the rescue for those of us who weren't born with green thumbs. It's an in-ground plant sensor that reads and analyzes growing conditions. It's geeky too, measuring everything you could possible need sunlight, temperature, humidity, soil moisture and drainage. AND it even uses the same technology used on NASA's Mars Phoenix mission to measure the soil.

Caspar Schlickum A Case All a frequent traveller will ever need. Seriously

Esther Dyson Valkee light-emitting earplugs for jet lag It shines light into your brain through your ear canals, and counteracts jet lag (as well as seasonal affective disorder) when timed appropriately. I need a camera to show a close-up, but nothing else.
